How to increase sales via mobile phones thanks to usability

By Simon, 5 March, 2010, No Comment

An often overlooked sales avenue is mobile phone users and I admit it wasn’t until last year I began to take it more seriously.  I have been testing various ways of promoting the fact my sites  work on mobile phones like the iPhone and I’ve made quite an (obvious) discovery which has resulted in a big increase in overall sales…

By Simon, 10 February, 2010, No Comment

I have been contracting for the last 4 years and after my recent (brief) sprint in a permie job it got me thinking about life as a contractor and what it actually means. If you’ve been thinking about it then read on…

Google to start dropping IE6 support this year.

By Simon, 9 February, 2010, No Comment

Google will scale back IE6 support for Google Docs and Google Sites sometime after March 1st this year. Google announced that decision on Friday, two weeks after the company admitted that hackers had breached its network and stolen information.

“We plan to stop supporting older browsers for the rest of the Google Apps suite, including Gmail, later in 2010,” a Google spokesman confirmed today.

On Google’s no-support list along with IE6 are Mozilla’s Firefox 2.0, Apple’s Safari 2.0 and Google’s own Chrome 3.0.

Round up of some great posts

By Simon, 9 February, 2010, No Comment

As you would have seen I haven’t posted in a while. In-between Christmas and now I started a new job and then moved back to another job. I also had three freelance projects which meant I have been working until 1am almost every night since November.

I have been catching up on some posts over this time and there have been some real gems:

50 Free UI and wireframing kits – This is one of the best posts on smashing magazine for a long time. If, like me, you wireframe before building then this post is a real gem!

Icon sets for grunge-style pages – Although I have always disliked grunge in some cases it really works well. In this post there are a number of icons for these kinds of pages.

Prelaunch checklist - I thought I had a pretty good check list but this one covers everything I can think of. A great post!

CSS3 techniques you should know – I have been increasing my knowledge of CSS3 quite a bit over the last few months. With IE9 hinting that it will be supporting some CSS3 elements I have started using it more and more on recent projects. This post is a good one if you’re starting out.

Everything you need to know about image compression – I have been in meetings which lasted hours where the topic was how to reduce a page size by even a few bytes (I kid you not!). Coming from this background I spent a lot of time compressing files. This is a good post explaining a number of options you can go for.

I came up with an unusual design for a navigation for a client recently and I’ll be posting the how and why soon…
