First off there is nothing fancy about the layout of these pages. The purpose of this site is not to teach you how to layout a web site but to show the pitfuls and most common mistakes made by people designing them. I could have spent time creating a nice looking web site but I wanted to spend that time creating useful information instead.
I first wrote this section of my site in 2002 and even now at the end of 2004 it's all still so true.
Web design tips for the beginner is an ongoing project and if you have anything to share please let me know. I started web site design back in 1994 and in this time I have seen many changes, some good, some bad. Web design in today's World is much more complex that it ever was before. There are new ways of laying out a page, new laws to comply with and so much more. Most newcomers often don't realise just how varied the browsers and resolutions are. They check it in their browser in their resolution and think that they are all done. They often forget the dozens and dozens of browsers, different screen resolutions and the disabled.
The aim of my site is to give you a better understanding of the do's and don't and to discuss in hopefully an unbiased way the for's and against's for laying out your new site. Everyone has to start somewhere and the majority of first attempts all make the same mistakes.
This site will hopefully help you understand the most common mistakes and make your first attempt look great and more importantly work on everyone's browsers.
This kind of design is also great for search engines. Why not view the html source of this page and you'll see exactly why search engines love this kind of design method. Once you've had a look compare it to yours. Although I created this in dreamweaver you'll see hardly any html code because I used CSS to design the styles. You have to admit, the code does look super search engine friendly doesn't it?
